Why Ribbon Cores Come in 1" and 1.5" Sizes
If you've compared ribbons from different sellers, you've probably noticed the core — the cardboard or plastic tube the ribbon is wound around — comes in two common inner diameters: 1 inch (25.4mm) and 1.5 inch (38.1mm). This isn't a branding choice; it's a mechanical fit requirement, and using the wrong one means the ribbon simply won't mount on your printer's ribbon supply/take-up spindles.
Desktop and many mid-range industrial thermal transfer printers are built around a 1-inch spindle — this covers the majority of label printers used in retail back-offices, small warehouses, and general-purpose labeling. Larger industrial printers, especially high-throughput models designed for long print runs, more commonly use a 1.5-inch spindle. The larger core lets the printer wind a longer ribbon roll onto the same physical diameter, which means fewer ribbon changes during long production runs — a real efficiency gain in high-volume environments.
The core size is entirely independent of the ribbon's width or length: a 1-inch-core ribbon and a 1.5-inch-core ribbon can both be 110mm wide and 300m long — the core diameter only determines which printer it physically fits, not what it prints. Some printers ship with an adapter that lets a 1-inch-core ribbon run on a printer built for 1.5-inch cores, but this isn't universal, and it's not something to assume without checking your printer's manual or the seller's compatibility notes.
When ordering, always check your printer model's spindle size first, then filter for ribbons with that exact core diameter — the width and length can be adjusted for your label size and desired print run, but the core size has no flexibility at all.
